What are those ugly black streaks on roofs?
It may not shock you that, humid climates can encourage the growth of fungus on asphalt shingles. The result is unsightly green and black streaks that are especially noticeable on light-colored roofs. That being said, there is hope! You can use shingles that are “fungus resistant”. Shingles become fungus resistant with the addition of copper granules to the shingle surface.
Energy efficiency is important, but can the glass really make that big of a difference?
Absolutely! A quality built vinyl replacement window can increase your R-value from 1 up to 9 depending on the glass system you select. These ratings are determined by 3rd party testing facilities to accurately rate windows so you compare and make a wise, energy saving decision.
How do I determine if a roof should be replaced?
To be honest, sooner or later every roof needs to be replaced, usually due to the long-term effects of weathering. If a residential roof is more than 20 years old, it is a prime candidate for reroofing.
To determine if you need a new roof:
On the ground, walk around your home with binoculars and inspect your roof for cracked, curled or missing shingles, as well as any excessive loss of the protective mineral granules. DO NOT CLIMB ON THE ROOF; walking on the roof is dangerous and can damage your roof.
In your attic, take a flashlight and look at the underside of the roof deck and rafters for any stains or wet spots indicating water leaks.

How long should my roof last?
This depends on the roofing system, the quality of roofing materials, the quality of installation including whether the required installation methods were followed accurately. This can be as little as 10 years or a lifetime. O C Roofing Services is an expert at installing and repairing all major roofing systems; our professional installers are fully skilled in every aspect of the materials, systems and process required so you can experience the greatest life expectancy for your roof.
Should I be concerned with granules in the gutter?
Asphalt shingles are covered with ceramic granules to reflect water and light to protect the underlying material, and ultimately your roof. Your shingles experience erosion from water, UV light and heat. UV light and heat dries the shingles out; water wears away at the granules, some of which have been loosened by heat and light. Unfortunately, the more granules lost, the faster your roof will deteriorate.
Will my plants and trees be protected during the process?
O C Roofing Services will place tarps around your structure to catch anything that may fall from the roof (ie. nails, roofing material, etc).
Are there any issues with replacing my skylights?
O C Roofing Services will remove and replace the old skylight with a new one. We will flash and seal it to make it water tight. Please note, some skylights will require additional interior trim and painting. This is the responsibility of the homeowner unless discussed otherwise.
Is Ice and Water Shield necessary?
No roof is completely water tight. Ice dams and windblown rain can penetrate the roof’s outer shell, often times causing water damage. Applying an inexpensive Ice and Water Shield at the time of your roof replacement is the solution for winning the battle against water penetration.
